Flemish Bond Federal with a Beautiful Hearth

A twist on a classic. The purple door on this one is really striking and the lovely Flemish bond masonry is painted green! Flemish bond is a decorative masonry style; sides of the brick (stretchers) and ends of the brick (headers) alternate and the pattern created is really refined. You’ll often see Flemish bond with the headers in another color, and that contrast is seriously superb. The technique requires quite a bit of skill to execute, so it seems well deserved that the Christian Harshberger House is named after its builder. An ad ran on January 27, 1814 in The Engine of Liberty announcing the sale of the property that read, “For Sale – House and lot in Uniontown opposite Jonas Crumbacker’s store, brick, two story house, cellar under whole, brick kitchen adjoining and other outbuildings, Christian Harshberger.” A deed was transacted just two days later, at a sale price of $1350, so this house basically flew off the market back then! Read more about this and the history of the Christian Harshberger house in its National Register nomination, here.

Once stepping inside, it’s the wood burning hearth that steals the show for me immediately. It’s fully functional, too! There’s something about low, exposed beams and a huge rustic hearth that transport me, full-speed, into the past. This one’s a winner! Don’t overlook the the outbuildings, either – there’s a fully decked-out woodworking shop in the back and a huge hang-out spot with fire pit for entertaining.
