Kate Wood is an award-winning preservationist, real estate broker and principal of the full-service historic rehabilitation firm, Worth Preserving. Recognized as the go-to expert on properties of exceptional character and integrity, especially those listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Kate partners with clients to unlock the potential of old buildings using her deep network of trusted resources.
Preservation is her passion, rooted in over 15 years’ experience as the CEO of a major organization advocating for New York City landmarks including the iconic 2 Columbus Circle and Central Park West skyline. A sought-after public speaker and authoritative source for The New York Times and other press, she was recruited to teach preservation planning, advocacy and law at Columbia University and to co-author the book, Interior Landmarks: Treasures of New York, published in two editions by Monacelli Press. Today she is a regular presence on Circa Old Houses.
In 2017, she joined the team of respected pros at Hudson Valley real estate firm Patricia A. Hinkein Realty, working with clients to buy, sell and rent properties in Columbia, Greene and Northern Dutchess Counties. Kate believes in the essential value of old-building stewardship to sustain community character. For her, each property is a cause and each client a fellow advocate. Years of relationships, trust and know-how underpin her success in matching people with properties, skilled contractors, historic tax credits and other benefits to support top-tier rehabilitation projects.
Kate and her husband, New York School of Interior Design President David Sprouls, began rehabbing Hudson Valley historic homes for use as unique luxury escapes in 2007, ahead of the “AirBnB” curve. When not messing about with old houses, Kate relishes travel, reading, period dramas, growing vegetables, cooking, and being Patrick’s mom.
