Friendly Hills! The name makes me smile, the views are pretty incredible (I’m a Carolina Girl with a soft spot for Blue Ridge panoramas) and Margaret Banning lived here seasonally and wrote many of her bestsellers on site. Really fun to think of her roaming this grand property and working away in the small log cabin, built circa 1920s-30s. Banning was a prolific writer and an early advocate of women’s rights, if you’ve not heard the name. She wrote on the issues of religion, social change, and often featured women in non-traditional roles at a time when that took chutzpah. Ahead of her time just like this house! The pool is a 1920s era build contemporary to the house and was the first private one in Tryon- bet that had the town talking. Bidding starts at $975k and it was recently on the market for $2.45 million, so roll the dice?

“Friendly Hills”, a 1924 English Tudor-style home with 17+ manicured acres enveloped by the Foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This estate home, registered with NC Historic Preservation, was once owned by the renowned author, Margaret Culkin Banning. The log cabin that helped inspire her writings is still a part of this beautifully unique property. The moment you enter the foyer, this home will draw you into its one of a kind interior. The historic flavor of the wood floors, beamed 20′ ceilings and rock fireplace with a mantle made by the famous “Tryon Toymakers” exudes old world style. The home features amazing rockwork inside and out, from walkways to columns. Its amenities include a saltwater pool, a 3BR/2BA guest house and a large two-level shop that could be converted to another guest quarters. This private, knoll-top estate property is situated only 1.5 miles from downtown Tryon.
