My love of old houses and old things goes back to when I was a little girl. My grandmother’s home was small, but cozy and built around 1915. There were old rentals behind her home that were being used as storage for many antiques. It was my happy place. Fast forward to reupholstering my Barbies furniture to buying my first home in Portland Oregon built in 1907. It had seen better days, but I saw that it could be so much more than a statistic of another older home getting torn down. We poured 12 years of love into her and brought her back to life! We then fell in love with our current home – an 1892 Queen Anne that desperately needed saving. We have been working on her for four years, and I think the man that built her ( John M. Wallace from the Orkney Islands) and had her for his own residence to marry his bride and to raise his family in, would be proud that she was still standing tall. I consult with clients about preservation, restoring and remodeling older homes. My knowledge of older homes has been an organic one and self taught. I feel that older homes and buildings still have an important role in the fabric of our towns, cities and states. To me, there is nothing more important than saving them so that generations to come can enjoy everything they have to give us.
