Description
Some homes offer beautiful spaces. Others offer a story. At 843 Dayton Street, you get both.
Built in 1903 and standing proudly within Hamilton, Ohio’s Dayton Lane Historic District, 843 Dayton Street is a remarkable example of early twentieth-century architecture—one that has retained much of the craftsmanship and character that have defined the home for more than 120 years.
The City of Hamilton’s Ohio Historic Inventory identifies the property as the William B. Cullen–Herman L. Kutter House, connecting the residence to two figures associated with Hamilton’s extraordinary industrial era. By 1912, city directories document William B. Cullen and his wife, Grace, living at 843 Dayton Street. Cullen served as vice president and manager of the Miami Foundry Company. Herman L. Kutter was an engineer, inventor and executive whose career was closely associated with Hamilton’s Black-Clawson Company. While the precise history of their respective connections to the home continues to be researched, both names remain preserved in the city’s historic inventory.
And then there is March 25, 1913.
During the Great Flood of 1913, floodwaters inundated much of Hamilton and forever changed the city. More than a century later, a high-water marker remains attached to the exterior of 843 Dayton Street, identifying the level reached by the floodwaters and providing an extraordinary physical connection to one of the most consequential events in Hamilton’s history.
Historic character preserved
Step inside and the home’s history is immediately apparent.
Original and period architectural details remain throughout the residence, including beautiful hardwood floors, original interior doors and hardware, pocket doors, French doors, select original wood windows, leaded and stained glass, substantial millwork, fireplaces and an impressive staircase. The expansive front porch—an essential part of the home’s architectural presence—has also undergone significant restoration, including work to its columns, railings, flooring and skirting.
These aren’t simply decorative details. Together, they create the sense of craftsmanship, permanence and character that makes a great historic home nearly impossible to reproduce today.
Historic character. Modern living.
While the history has been respected, 843 Dayton Street has continued to evolve for modern life.
A newly remodeled kitchen brings a fresh, sophisticated feel to the heart of the home, while updated baths and an extensively renovated third floor provide flexibility rarely found in a residence of this age. Significant improvements have also been made to the home’s plumbing and electrical systems, with central air serving the upper floors and a tankless water heater among the modern upgrades.
Outside, the lifestyle becomes even more unexpected.
A saltwater in-ground pool with automatic cover creates a private backyard retreat, while the oversized detached garage offers two-car frontage plus tandem third-bay capacity—an especially rare amenity for a historic in-town property.
The result is a home that doesn’t ask its next owner to choose between historic character and modern enjoyment.
A home more than 120 years in the making
843 Dayton Street has witnessed Hamilton grow from one of Ohio’s great manufacturing centers into the city it is today. It has survived a historic flood, generations of owners and more than a century of change while retaining the architectural character that makes it distinctive.
The grand staircase is still here.
The stained glass is still here.
The pocket doors, woodwork and craftsmanship are still here.
Even the 1913 flood marker remains.
For more than 120 years, each generation has added another chapter to the story of 843 Dayton Street.
Now, someone new has the opportunity to become part of it.
