Description

Standing majestically atop a 6.2-acre knoll dotted with ageless Oaks, towering Magnolias, flowering period shrubs, and Dogwoods, Saragreen is adorned with four beautiful and rare Temple-of-the-Winds Corinthian columns and is first of the large historic homes to greet visitors to Historic Washington, Georgia. You will be in awe as you ascend the long drive and approach this gracious Southern home with circular drive and lamplit brick walkways.

So named for Sarah Green Campbell, sister of U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Archibald Campbell and daughter of Duncan G. Campbell, Saragreen was built by Sarah and her young lawyer husband Daniel Chandler in 1828 on lands owned by the Campbell family. Also referred to by many as the Irvin Home, it has been occupied by many prominent Washington residents throughout the years. Isaiah Tucker Irvin II, Commander of the Irvin Guards and Speaker of the House of Representatives, bought the home in 1835. Charles Irvin, grandson of Isaiah T. Irvin, Jr, purchased the home in 1883 and it remained in the family until 1978.

This spectacular home boasts a wide center hall entered through double front doors intersected by a wide cross hall with entry from one of three porches that surround the home. There are 5 large bedrooms, each with private full baths and wonderful fireplaces! An additional half bath/powder room is on the main level. The spacious primary bedroom is on the main level with 4 bedrooms/4 baths upstairs along with a second laundry area on the upper level. An over-sized country kitchen provides a breakfast/casual dining area overlooking the stunning grounds. The kitchen is complete with a 6-burner gas stove and separate large pantry/laundry room.

There is a gorgeous formal parlor, formal dining room, den/library, large windows (many floor-to-ceiling) bathing the home in natural light, mantled fireplaces in most every room with gas coal/log inserts, glistening original Heart of Pine floors throughout, soaring ceilings, chandeliers, impressive staircase, second floor landing seating area, and much, much more!

Updated with all modern day amenities for comfortable, easy living: City Water, City Sewer, Natural Gas, 3 HVAC units, Gas Heat, and affordable taxes!

Washington, Georgia, is 40 miles East of Athens (University of Georgia), 50 miles West of Augusta (Home of Masters Golf Tournament, Medical College of Georgia), and 90 Miles East of Atlanta (less than 2 hours from the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport). Close proximity to numerous other charming small towns and some of Georgia’s largest and most beautiful recreational lakes and State Parks!
