Painter’s Folly — c. 1857 Italianate Landmark, Studio to Andrew Wyeth, Seeking a Preservation Partner

Painter’s Folly is a circa 1857 Italianate villa on 3.4 acres in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and sited within both the Chadds Ford Historic District and the Brandywine Battlefield Historic District. Built for Samuel H. Painter, the house is one of the most significant art-historical properties in the Brandywine Valley — and, unusually for CIRCA, it is not yet for sale to an individual buyer. Chadds Ford Township, which has owned the property since 2018, is seeking an established nonprofit, institutional, or educational partner to take it on through a long-term lease or conveyance under Pennsylvania’s Second-Class Township Code.

From 1898 to 1903, illustrator Howard Pyle lived at Painter’s Folly while running a summer art school there. His students included Clifford Ashley, Bertha Corson Day, Angel De Cora, Clyde O. DeLand, Thornton Oakley, Frank Schoonover, and Newell Convers Wyeth — a roster that makes the house a foundational site of the Brandywine School of Art. Beginning in 1989, Andrew Wyeth used the house as a studio for roughly twenty years, producing numerous titled and untitled works there, including the tempera Painter’s Folly. Later, owner Helen Murray Sipala, who restored the property, documented her decades-long relationship with Wyeth in a 445-page diary and photograph collection now archived at the Delaware Art Museum.

The house retains sixteen original fireplaces, pine flooring, soaring plaster-molded ceilings, a center-hall staircase, wraparound verandas, and a glass-enclosed cupola immortalized in Wyeth’s work — along with a detached carriage house / two-car garage.

The Painter’s Folly Preservation Alliance (PFPA), a volunteer advocacy group formed in 2025, has spent the past year building the case for the site’s preservation: a published historical narrative, oral histories with Helen Murray Sipala, archival digitization, a pre-approved PA state historical marker application, and support from the Brandywine Conservancy, Chadds Ford Historical Society, Delaware County Historical Society, and Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia, among others. A Change.org petition to preserve the house has drawn more than 800 signatures. The Alliance’s advocacy is credited with pausing the Township’s original public-auction timeline; no auction date is currently scheduled.
