History of Agnew House
Agnew House was built between 1904 and 1907 for Mace and Sarah Agnew. Mace was the son of John G. and Mary Agnew. However, he died on August 17, 1905, before he could occupy their new home together. Sarah lived there from 1907-1908. Her health made it necessary to move one street over and have a live-in nurse. Today, the Agnew family members rest in Jacksonville’s vast, historic Evergreen Cemetery, two miles away.

In the early 1900s, advertisements for vacant lots and new homes in Springfield–one of the two preferred communities of Jacksonville’s upper crust– abounded in local newspapers. In 1908, Agnew House was purchased by a well-respected local banker, Terril “TJ” Brooks, and his wife Cordelia, and son, Terril, Jr. At that time, Mr. Brooks was the “Cashier” at The Guaranty Trust & Savings Bank, located at the northeast corner of Bay and Ocean Streets, home of the iconic Bostwick Building. The Brooks family resided at Agnew House until 1922.

City records and maps show the original structure had an L-shaped porch on the main level. It is likely the home was used at some point to accommodate boarders on the second level. Much later (c. 1960), Agnew House was remodeled as a duplex with an upper and lower apartment. When it was later converted back to a single-family dwelling, the Liberty Street-facing section of the porch became interior space and also added square footage upstairs.

For the past decade, Springfield’s designated historic district has experienced unprecedented revitalization and growth. Learn more about its much-sought “porch life” and the annual Porch Fest at www.sparcouncil.org
