Welcome to the Historic Louis Pfunder House.
Pioneer and horticulturist, Louis Pfunder was instrumental in designing and landscaping the iconic Central Park in Manhattan, as well as influencing “The Garden State” in New Jersey. Pfunder, enamored with Portland’s climate, selected a prime corner lot with ideal exposure on all four sides.
At the time, Gustav Stickley was gaining prominence in the Craftsman movement. His philosophy emphasized harmonizing homes with their natural environment, fostering a spiritual connection with nature, and prioritizing natural light. This resonated with Pfunder. He engaged architect Emil Schacht to design 2211 SW Vista. Schacht and Pfunder balanced a cozy ambiance with refined elegance, incorporating architectural delights and ensuring the home’s comfort and scale harmonized seamlessly. The Povey Brothers enhanced the home with their stunning stained art glass windows showcasing botanical themes on all four sides.
The home’s elevated position, providing privacy, maximizes natural light from every direction while casting patterns of colored light throughout the home, captivating and inspiring guests and residents alike.
The inspiration led to a passion for preservation. A journey that began with a postcard featuring the home and led to a 20-year restoration effort that included surfaces, exterior and systematic updates. The home has been featured in various publications, kitchen revival tours, and advertising campaigns for Neil Kelly.Updated baths and kitchen effortlessly blend period-appropriate features such as custom Pratt & Larson tile, and furniture-grade Stickley-inspired cabinets.
A finished third floor offers additional space and captures views of downtown Portland, Mt. Adams, and the fireworks displays. The full, unfinished basement boasts high ceilings and direct access to the attached two-car garage. The level double lot flourishes with level lawns, and inviting patios, porches, and a new kitchen deck.
Conveniently located just half a mile to NW 23rd Avenue, Providence Park, downtown, the Pearl District, Slabtown. Council Crest Park and the Marquam trail system offer endless opportunities for outdoor activities, from leisurely strolls to invigorating hikes. Stroll down the hill to the Farmer’s Market at the Park Blocks, where you can pick up seasonal produce while admiring the mature trees that Louis Pfunder planted over a century ago.
Today 2211 SW Vista resides as one of the City’s earliest Craftsman homes and the architect is deemed the Father of the Craftsman Movement for Portland.
