This remarkable hand-hewn log home, dating to 1854, represents a rare and intact example of Kentucky’s double pen dogtrot vernacular – a form that defined rural domestic life across the mid-South in the antebellum period. The home was discovered beneath decades of clapboard siding on a farm in Greenville, Kentucky, where it had stood largely untouched since the 1940s. Recognizing its significance, the preservationist owners undertook a meticulous log-by-log disassembly, numbering each timber before relocating and reconstructing the structure on its current site in Kuttawa. Both original hand-carved mantels survive in place. The stone fireplace retains its carved date of 1854. Original mud chinking, installed using traditional methods rather than modern flexible compounds, has performed flawlessly. Wide-plank salvaged wood floors run throughout. Period-appropriate windows and doors, sourced from other historic Kentucky and Tennessee properties, were carefully selected to complement the original fabric of the home.

The dogtrot, now enclosed, serves as the central passage of the home and remains one of its most evocative spaces. The structure has been expanded to three bedrooms and two bathrooms, with the addition of a back room that honors the scale and character of the original build. Modern systems, including central HVAC, electricity, and plumbing, have been sensitively integrated. A 36×40 barn sits on the property, which totals one acre across three wooded lots.
