We're Totally Charmed By This San Antonio Craftsman

We're Totally Charmed By This San Antonio Craftsman

by Annilee Waterman.

Everything is bigger (and better) in Texas, including the old houses! We’re so excited to welcome interior designer and old house enthusiast Annilee B. Waterman to the CIRCA team, who will periodically share with us her favorite old house findings all across the Lone Star State.

Y’all know I love a good fixer upper, so I’m putting this house in the “restoration goals” category. This Craftsman beauty has been restored top to bottom, and they did an amazing job.

The owners stayed true to the architecture and period of this home, while updating and modernizing the essentials seamlessly. Original details are intact throughout, including windows, doors, woodwork, and built ins. They really did a quality job, without overdoing it. It looks as though they’ve kept the original floorplan downstairs, with only the addition of the stairs in the kitchen which lead to the converted attic. It’s all open and airy, yet earthy and grounded; something special to look at everywhere you turn.

The exterior is classic Craftsman with a double front gable, deep porch, chunky tapered columns, brickwork, an amazing front entrance and huge casement windows.

The doors, sidelights and transoms are even better on the inside, and fill up an entire wall in the living room. Talk about a feature wall! Also, that fireplace, understated, yet full of detail. Opposite the entry is a totally gorgeous, original, stained wood cased opening with built in display cabinets and tapered columns, flowing beautifully into the dining room. Look at all the woodwork in here: the original built in buffet & hutch, picture rails, coffered ceilings! Loving the period chandelier too.

The kitchen is newly remodeled with Shaker cabinets, soapstone counters, a farm sink and… that stove…! Hello vintage O`Keefe & Merritt! It fits the house just right.

Off the kitchen is a sunny nook, great for breakfast. The 2 bedrooms feature a Jack-and-Jill layout. The bathroom includes its original claw foot tub, and has been restored with clean, simple period style finishes and fixtures.

The attic has been converted to a huge, private master suite. Nicely finished in a more contemporary style, the new master bath blends nicely with the period, while not pretending to be antique.

The yard and garden are xeriscaped, perfect for the central Texas climate, and the back entertaining area is super cute.

Wishing I was in San Antonio right now so I could go see it!
