Architect: Donald MacDonald (donaldmacdonaldarchitects.com). Best known for his 2013 redesign of the San Francisco Bay Bridge.
This is a reproduction of a Norwegian storehouse built in A.D. 1325. The original is in Skansen, an open-air museum of Scandinavian architecture, located in Stockholm, Sweden. It was hand-constructed from the last of the harvested old-growth California redwoods, lumber which will never be available again. The exterior hand carvings were copied from the original. Vastveitloftet was started in 1968, and most work finished in about 1996.
Bear Valley is a very quiet and private village in the California Sierra, just three hours from the San Francisco Bay Area. The development has a private lake and a small school, downhill and cross country skiing, plus summer hiking.
Vastveitloftet sits at about 7300 ft. altitude. It has a 180 degree view of the Dardanelles range.
