The Talley House in the Old West End

126 Chestnut St, Danville, VA 24541, USA
$46,200

Description

A Queen Anne Victorian, this turreted home could be the most outstanding on the block. Beautiful carved front doors are among the most magnificent in Danville. Stripped to the studs inside but the windows ere saved for reinstallation.

Built by May Talley in 1890 — not something a woman commonly did in those days. May lived here with her son Hebert and ran the Conservatory of Music during the ten years in Danville.  She sold the house in 1899 to Jesse R. Noell, Jr.  He died, leaving behind a wife and three small children.  The widow Noell sold the house to A.M. Bendall. It sold again just two years later to Rutledge Carter, a partner in the Danville Hardware Company. The Carters owned the house until 1922 when it was sold to Charles Leroy and Sallie Anderson Turner. When Mrs. Turner died in 1951, the property changed hands again. Ray S. and Louis Hill Bowden moved here from Philadelphia. He was a sales associate of the Reynolds Tobacco Company there and came here to work closer to headquarters.  They owned the house until 1984. Since then, the house has stood mostly empty and had fallen into disrepair.

But this home is presently undergoing exterior stabilization and rehabilitation. It will be ready for a new owner and new interior very soon.

Located in the Old West End National Historic District which boasts the most amazing collection of Victorian and Edwardian homes anywhere in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
