Description

Started in 1740 and designated a complete homestead in the public records in 1773, the Shuart Van Orden House is maybe the most complete and well preserved example of the early Dutch Hudson Valley architectural style and so duly recognized as a gem on the National Register of Historic Places.  The home, always historically rich, and restored to perfection in the 1980s, is also now well adapted for modern living thanks to the efforts of its last two owners.

The home’s interior is characterized by wide plank oak and cedar floors milled from trees on the property, wavy glass windows, original Dutch doors, exposed stone walls and tulip wood beams. The warm white walls and large open spaces, unusual for a home of this period, provide plenty of natural light all through the day.  There are 6 fireplaces, including a massive 8 ft wide, 6 ft tall summer cooking hearth with a beehive oven and another, in the den, with a cozy Jotul wood burning stove.  The wood paneling, shelves, doors with iron hardware are all original and restored to perfection.  Farrow & Ball paint has been used on all surfaces.

The kitchen-dining room is outfitted with custom cabinets from a local master craftsman, a 48” AGA range with multiple ovens, two basic copper sinks, two Fisher-Paykell Dishwasher drawers, and a SubZero 36” refrigerator with freezer.  The current owners have also introduced geothermal heating and cooling in the entire house, custom storm windows, screen doors and a state-of-the-art security system.

The living quarters on the first floor, as you come in from the rear entrance, has a den and a living room to the left and the kitchen and dining room to the right, all with wood burning fire places.  Through the dining area you access the “second house” which was a stone house from the same period relocated from another part of New Paltz by one of the previous owners and meticulously rebuilt stone by stone.  This wing has a study, easily converted to a bedroom, a bathroom, a sitting area and a staircase leading to the ground floor that has a second living room with a fireplace.  A door from this living room leads to the Tavern with the 8 ft fireplace, a cozy lounge with a dry bar made entirely of reclaimed oak from the property, an ode to Van Orden’s ownership of a distillery in the 1800s.

The sleeping quarters are on the second floor of the main house that include a stately master bedroom, two additional bedrooms and a fabulous bathroom with an 1800s copper lined tub.

From the original covered veranda you step on to the newly built stone patio that overlooks the property’s seven rolling acres with an acre pond.  One of the barns has been converted into a modern guest house. It has an office, a bedroom, kitchen and full bath with an outdoor shower on the first floor.  On the second floor is a captivating hay-loft movie house with a professional quality sound system, theater sized 14 foot retractable screen and a snack bar for a total movie going experience.  The other outbuildings include a breathtaking 18th century stone granary and party pavilion for outdoor dining under string lights, a majestic red barn, an inspiring potting shed, a storage barn and a whimsical 1700s outhouse.  The entire compound has newly installed 6 ft. cedar fencing resting on a recently created 4 foot berm for maximum privacy on the front and side and 10 foot deer fencing all around with gates to allow access to the stream bordering the property at the back.

Located just a few minutes from downtown New Paltz and the Minnewaska State Park, on a quiet road dotted with historically significant homes, the Shuart Van Orden house is an idyllic Hudson Valley homestead.  Close to the Mohonk Mountain Preserve and the Shawangunk Ridge, twenty minutes to the Poughkeepsie Amtrak and MetroNorth and less than 90 minutes from New York City.
