It is not often that such a stately property, steeped in Chester County history, is available for sale. Step back in time & enter the front door into a wide center hall entrance. Flanking the center hall, you will find the formal parlor to the right, followed by the study. With the parlor having its own exterior door & being connected by a door into the study, this space could be used for an in-home business. Left of the center hall is the library with built-ins on 2 walls as well as entrance to the formal dining room. The dining room was once the kitchen & contains an enormous walk-in fireplace.
You will find 2 staircases: 1 is an alternate way up to the 2nd floor flex space, currently a family room space. Could potentially be a 9th bedroom. 2nd staircase takes you down to the spotless 1800’s basement. The entire basement has been painted & copper pipes were polished.
Back on the 1st floor, you’ll find the kitchen addition, built in 1880, off the dining room. Southern exposure soaks the kitchen in natural sunlight. The kitchen plan was painstakingly put together by previous owners. Hand painted Portuguese tiling, commercial grade Garland gas range, and loaded w/nooks & crannies. Open to exposed beams and an upstairs loft area that can be accessed off the laundry room or a secret door off the 2nd floor flex room. Every window has a gorgeous view. Laundry room is off the back of the kitchen, with a door to stone patio.
Back to the center hall, there is a powder room tucked under the stairs & the hallway opens to a great room addition from the 1960s. Soaring ceilings, enormous stone fireplace, & French doors that open out to the stone patio, leading to the inground saltwater pool. A stunning Dawn Redwood tree adorns the patio area that overlooks pastures, an orchard & French Creek.
Back inside, head upstairs to the 2nd floor. Off the back, over the newest addition, you’ll find the spacious owners suite. Complete with ensuite full bath & walk-in closet. There are 3 more spacious bedrooms, hall closets and luxuriously appointed hall bath. Hall bath includes marble flooring and accents, soaking tub, 2 sink vanity and a separate tiled shower. Door off the hall leads to a stepover into the flex space & up to the 3rd floor. On the 3rd floor, you will find 4 more bedrooms and an updated hall bath.
Head outside to explore the additional features of the property. Off the great room a covered walkway leads to an oversized 3 car garage. There is a property owned solar system on the garage roof with net meter selling back any unused power to the electric company. Next to the garage, there is an oversized walk-in chicken coop with attached run. Follow the abandoned lane to the custom-built barn, with 2 large box stalls and plenty of storage space. Fencing is in good repair.
EVERYTHING on the property has been repainted, inside & out, including the door hardware. Major systems recently replaced: newer roof, water heater, heating system, & 1st floor AC. Cast iron pipes in basement were replaced.
Steep yourself in history & old-world charm. This home offers a private setting yet is close to modern amenities and everything Chester County, PA has to offer.
Sheeder Mansion History
Built in 1833 by Frederick Sheeder to originally be an Inn,
but the road was diverted prior to its completion. He went
on to raise a family of 10 children in this truly 8 bedroom
mansion (could be 9). The ruins of his family’s very
profitable Paper Mill and Saw Mill are out front of the
home. Frederick Sheeder built over 25 building in the
local area. His barn (no longer on this property, it’s across
the street) was the largest barn in Chester County. Upon
request of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, he wrote
a very thorough book about the Township’s history, so you
can truly step back in time while reading his book in the
study he built. The property was first settled in 1746,
when the first mill was built. Frederick immigrated to
America from Germany, with his family, in 1793. Trained
as a tailor, he was a tailor to George Washington! The
property (originally 81 acres) stayed in the Sheeder Family
for over 100 years! Prior to Frederick’s passing the
property to his son, Joseph in 1868, he did attempt to sell
it. The ad description at that time read: “The
improvements consist of a new mansion house, 35 x 45,
with cellar under, divided into four departments by cross
walls, with four rooms and entry on the first floor, five
rooms on the second floor and four rooms on the garret,
all plastered. A new sawmill, under good repair, and a one-
vat papermill, lately built.” Once Joseph acquired, he
updated it and added on to the South side (now the
kitchen). His daughter, Anna, was the last to remain at
the property and passed in the mid 1900s.
