Historically significant contributing structure to the Downtown Goldsboro Historic District!
Built in 1894 by Marcellus J. Best, a prominent business leader, the M.J. Best House is an important Victorian structure on a spacious downtown lot. Damage done by previous owners has left this home as a shell primed for a new addition at the rear and smaller, gracious front porch. The loss of this home will be detrimental to the historic district and Preservation North Carolina’s ongoing neighborhood revitalization efforts.
Preservation North Carolina has made extensive repairs and replacement of the foundation, removed incompatible later additions of poor construction, installed new roof framing and asphalt shingles on the rear of the house, and installed the foundation for a more appropriately-sized and historically accurate front porch, plus a two-story rear addition. Architectural renderings and floor plans showing a suggested configuration are available, as well as engineering plans that were used for the foundation repairs and new foundation built in 2016. A variety of salvaged historic building materials are available for the rehabilitation of the property including balustrade, doors, mantels, and more.
The property has been condemned by the city since 2006. We are seeking a buyer who will be able to address the immediate needs of its rehabilitation. Contact us if you or someone you know is interested in purchasing this diamond in the rough. The buyer will need to show capacity for at least $100,000 in addition to the purchase price in order to stabilize the exterior.
This property is protected by Preservation North Carolina covenants.
As a contributing structure in the Downtown Goldsboro Historic District, the property may be eligible for historic rehabilitation tax credits.
