About This Old House

Originally the home of the Cardigan Mountain School, this elegant Greek Revival structure has graced Canaan Street since 1796. In the late 1800’s the “Hotel Lucerne” opened it’s doors to the public as a small but elegant stopover, opening its doors in June for a 10-week season. In the spring and summer months, the focus was on swimming in the clear lake waters, tennis, croquet, golf, and fishing. Enjoying the great outdoors was the focus of guests and their families.
In the fall, the focus turned to foliage and enjoying the “ripening” of trees and nature. The grounds and the lake provided the perfect backdrop for the colors of autumn.

In the early 1900’s, the building was remodeled and expanded to its current footprint, still bordering on Canaan St Lake (then known as Crystal Lake) to encompass over 20 guest rooms, 2 large parlors, extensive public spaces, and a large wrap-around porch that framed the structure.
