Description
Situated on a rise surrounded by nearly 20 acres of mature hardwoods and rolling grass meadows, and directly beneath a rugged Revolutionary War fortification known as South Redoubt, this magnificent Country Home was designed in 1863 by AJ Davis and completed in 1867 for the Honorable Edwards Pierrepont (b.1817) of New York City, a prominent lawyer, the 33rd United States Attorney General, advisor to President Lincoln and eye witness to the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, he was appointed to President Grant’s cabinet and later served as Minister Plenipotentiary to Britain.
Alexander Jackson Davis’ (b. 1803) elegant and symmetrical design reflects several years of Davis’ Country Homes executed for prominent families during the antebellum era in the northeast, notably the Hudson Valley, with commissions including Lyndhurst in Tarrytown, NY and multiple assignments for the Livingston family.
The home features remarkable details and craftmanship, including innovative sliding glass pocket doors that open onto the broad veranda, soaring gothic revival windows and gracefully mill work and innovative engineering.
Adjacent parcels (available separately) include the original carriage house / guest house, pool, workshop, multiple barns, and luxury studio apartment.
