Description

The Elms built circa 1804, originally had two ground floor rooms, two above and a two room attic. All 6 rooms serviced by a central chimney. There was a front and a real gallery on the two lower or main floors. The house faced south. Before 1810, the rear galleries on the lower two floors were enclosed for additional rooms. At this time the house was stuccoed and double galleries surrounded the whole structural.

In 1856 extensive remodeling included a new two-story wing added to provide a formal parlor on the first floor and a master bedroom above it. This addition enclosed the front galleries into hallways to line the older portion to the new. The staircase connecting these halls is a lacy cast iron. It is thought to be the only one of its kind in Mississippi.

The Elms has had a colorful history, serving for one 10 year period (1825-1835) as the Presbyterian Manse and for a few years in the early 1840’s as a young ladies’ boarding school. The tutors advertising that the site was “sheltered, retired with extensive pleasure grounds.”

In the years preceding the Civil War, the house was the residence o the prominent David Stanton family who enlarged The Elms in 1856 by adding the two-story frame wing. Mr. Stanton was a brother of Frederick Stanton, for whom beautiful Stanton Hall was constructed. Mr. Thomas Rose was the architect for both buildings. The house has been known as “The Elms” since 1843 and was occasionally referred to as “the Drake Home” after Mosely John Posey and Caroline Agee Drake moved here in 1869. In 1878 they purchased the property from the Stanton’s and their great-great-great-granddaughter Ms. Esther Carpenter occupies the house the house today.
