About This Old House

The Benjamin S. Doe House was built circa 1870. It is Second Empire style and is the only mansard roof home in the National Historic District of Paris Hill, Maine. According to the book “Portrait of Paris Hill” by Martin Dibner, “As a symbol of high European fashion, the Doe House marked the climax of Paris Hill’s architectural development” because after this time most “new” construction would take place in the town of South Paris below.

The Doe House is nestled on Hannibal Hamlin Drive amidst other historic structures, including the Hannibal Hamlin House, birthplace of Lincoln’s first vice president and the First Baptist Church of Paris which boasts a Paul Revere Foundry bell in its tower. It is one of the most desirable locations in the National Historic District and also one that includes a westerly view of the White Mountains and Mount Washington.

The Doe House is convenient to the major ski areas in Western Maine including Sunday River, Shawnee Peak, and Mount Abram. A beautiful nine hole golf course is just moments away at the Paris Hill Country Club. The village also boasts the Hamlin Memorial Library & Museum, the Paris Hill Historical Society, and the Paris Hill Community Club, all active organizations that make living on Paris Hill a true New England community experience.
