The Susan Torrey Merritt House was built in 1820 and served as a stop on the underground railroad throughout the 1800’s. This classic Greek Revival style house has been lovingly restored and enhanced with period details throughout. The house features a hand carved wooden facade under the wrap around farmers porch, made to look like stone and is original to the house.  The fluted pillars are in exceptional shape and were updated with capitals when the farmer’s porch was rebuilt in 2018.  No detail or expense was spared. We restored this house as our forever home. We recently were presented with a once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase and restore a 1768 Georgian home with a barn and amazing grounds that we couldn’t pass up.  The .55 acre lot is on a hill and offers wrap around trees that offer privacy and tranquility.   The house is 2 miles from MBTA and Commuter Rail and 12 miles due South of Boston. Salt water access is 1 1/2 miles down the road, along with excellent restaurants, parks and boating opportunities.

This house has the classic farm house feel while having high ceilings, loads of character and is extremely cozy. It is a special, unique property that epitomizes the height of the Greek Revival period of architecture.

Inside the house, wide pine floors, stone fireplaces, ornate mantles and beautiful woodwork can been found throughout.  The dining room offers a built in leaded glass  china cabinet, along with a stone fireplace and wide pine floors and a bluestone hearth. The living room has  quadruple aspect floor to ceiling windows, which were professionally restored and winterized. A stone fireplace, dentil crown molding and  original wide pine floors are installed throughout. A beautiful stone front beehive oven is located in the kitchen, with 2 year old Kitchen Aid appliances (French Door Stainless Steel Fridge, Gas range and dishwasher . The downstairs full bathroom features three quarter wainscoting and a tub/shower combo with a vanity and sink. The current den offers the flexibility and possibility of being a Master bedroom with adjoining laundry room and full bathroom.  From the kitchen, a full sized breakfast room opens out to a cathedral ceiling barn board room and sunroom with a large wood fired Hearthstone stove.  A 1 1/2 car garage and large screened in porch complete the first floor layout.

Upstairs are three bedrooms and one full bathroom. The current master bedroom is 16′ x 12′ and has four windows. The upstairs bathroom features a stand alone roll top bath, vaulted ceilings, as well as a separate shower and mosaic tile throughout.

All utilities have been updated (200A electric, new plumbing, condensing hot water boiler and Unico air handlers with central A/C).  In 2022 a new electrical feed was installed to provide power to the 200 A breaker panel. All wiring is modern- NO KNOB AND TUBE anywhere in the house.

During renovations in 2009, the kitchen and two bathrooms were gutted and rebuilt. New cabinets and countertops were installed in the kitchen during this time. New wide select grade pine floors were installed in the dining room and breakfast room. A new 200 Amp electrical system was installed at the same time. Unico high velocity air handlers were installed in the attic and basement, along with a high efficiency condensing stainless steel hot water boiler and indirect water heater.  All plumbing was replaced with modern materials in 2009 as well. In 2010, A/C condensers were added for central air. All three chimneys were repointed, re-flashed and stucco’d in 2015.  New  board and batten siding from a sawmill was installed on the garage in 2019, along with new screens and trim in the screened in porch. New gutters were installed on the back half of the house in summer 2023.  This house is turn key. It needs nothing. It pains us to let her go, but we are looking for the right people who are looking for the classic charm of a greek revival along with modern conveniences and comfort.
