Historical Details of Plum Run Farm

[Excerpt from “History of The Land” by Juanita & Arthur Hess-4/78]
Plum Run, a small creek presumably named for the wild plums which grew on the trees at one time lining its banks, is a tributary of Salt Creek in the SW corner of Pickaway County, Ohio. Its name presently used to identify a farm situated in its valley and on the adjacent hills.
Many years ago this land was occupied by the Shawnee Indians and was once claimed by both the British and the French but was taken over by the British in 1763. The Shawnees, in order to prevent settlement on their land by frontiersmen, made many raids on the settlements in northern Kentucky. In retaliation the British under Lord Dunmore sent a force north across the Ohio River. They met the Shawnees under Chief Cornstalk at Camp Charlotte, very near and to the west of the present location of Plum Run Farm. The village of Leistville now occupies the site. Here a peace treaty was made in 1774.
As a result of the Revolutionary War, the American colonies gained all of the land from the British in 1783. In 1787 created the Northwest Territory from the land north and west of the Ohio River.
In 1796 Congress employed Ebenezer and Jonathan Zane to mark the route of an old Indian trail from Wheeling to Maysville, Kentucky. This route developed into a crude road for settlers to travel and was called Zane’s Trace. It passed just west of the Plum Run and probably influenced early settlement of this area. Some years later Zane’s Trace became the Zanesville and Maysville Turnpike and was the route followed by stage coaches…
Peter Parcels purchased the acreage in 1803 and built the main part of the home sometime between 1810-1814. It was built of frame construction cut from cherry and walnut timber. The foundation is native stone. Interior included plaster walls & plank flooring of cherry and pine. Doors wear the original locks and brass doorknobs from England.
In 1839 Peter’s son bought the farm and built an addition at the back of the home. He added a keeping room with walnut woodwork and fireplace, and built a bedroom directly above. Another addition came in 1969 with a mudroom and half bath. Vinyl siding was placed over the original clapboard. The single story Federal style porch was replaced with a 2 story porch that stretches across the entire width of the front of the home with towering columns.
Plum Run Farm was on the Historical Society Tour of Homes in 1982.
