Description

This beautiful three-story, brick home located in Newton, Iowa (30 minutes east of Des Moines) was built in 1928 by T.H. Maytag of the Maytag Compay, which was headquartered in Newton for many years.  The home was constructed by Milo Wood and Carl V. Johnson was the architect.  Many families have happily called this house home, including television’s Sara Haines (of The View fame).

The 3,449 square foot home (plus additional square footage in the finished attic and mostly finished basement) features four large bedrooms located on the second level and one full bathroom and one half bath.  Additionally, the basement is fully plumbed for another full bath.  The home features mahogany woodwork throughout the main and second levels as well as original oak hardwood floors.

The main floor consists of a large living room with a hard carved, walnut fireplace mantle and surrounding built-ins with an adjoining sunroom (currently used as a music room).  Along with a large foyer and central staircase featuring walnut treads and a handmade, wrought-iron banister, there is a large dining room and breakfast nook, featuring a built-in china cabinet.  The kitchen maintains the original tile and cabinets but has brand new appliances, making it a cook’s kitchen.  There is a second stair case that leads up from the kitchen area to the second level.

The basement includes a finished family room and large laundry room, as well has a workout room and unfinished bathroom that is fully -plumbed.

The house has a tile roof and was fitted with new gas furnaces and air conditioners within the past five years.

Highlights of the home include four sets of beveled-glass French doors; high ceilings with extensive crown molding; original windows and doors, along with their original hardware (many of the door knobs were sourced from Europe originally); and a number of original light fixtures, including chandeliers and sconces, which were also imported from Europe when the house was build.  The house was featured in the 2016 Newton Tour of Homes.

The home sits on approximately three-quarters of an acre, on a quiet street, surrounded by old growth pines and larches.  A large hard maple sits in front of the house and a number of perennial beds can be found on the property, including surrounding the large brick patio, brick gazebo, and large in-ground fountain.  After dark, outdoor lighting illuminates the house creating a dramatic effect.  The yard and gardens were featured in the 2016 Newton Garden Walk.

This beautiful and historic home showcases exquisite craftsmanship but is also family friendly and full of modern-day comforts.
