Stonebrook

5 Norfield Rd, Weston, CT 06883, USA
$2,595,000

Description

This idyllic, enchanting retreat transports you to the pastoral English countryside with its fieldstone manor house, sweeping lawns, gardens and many outbuildings. The manor house, the primary residence, incorporates antique beams, original brick & pine flooring, detailed woodwork and 5 fireplaces into a casually elegant residence.

Built in the 1930’s by Alice De Lamar (America’s richest “bachelor girl” at the time) this estate was a full working farm with animals, apple orchards and vegetable gardens. The staff of 30+ included farm hands, gardeners, chefs, housekeepers and handymen all of whom were paid on Fridays from the “pay station”, a small room on the side of the three-car garage that remains today. Several outbuildings also remain on the 8.4 acre property. The 3 BR, 2BA guest cottage and 1 BR studio can host in-laws, guests or be rented out. A horse barn with 2 stalls, storage barn with full workshop, greenhouse and raised bed gardens add to the charm and splendor of this magnificent property.

Ms. De Lamar loved to entertain. Visitors to Stonebrook included Dave Brubeck, Laura Ingalls Wilder, SalvadorDalí, Eva Le Gallienne and George Balanchine. The property features a beautifully situated, oversized pool built with a tunnel leading from the basement. It is rumored the tunnel was built so Ms. De Lamar could eavesdrop on her guests conversations before entering the pool. Others claim it was so that she could swim in the nude without fear of being seen walking out to the pool.

Ms. De Lamar maintained a sawmill and forge across the road on Newtown Turnpike, where all the hardware for the main home and outbuildings was created. She was also one of the early owners of the Cobbs Mill Inn in Weston. In 1936, she converted the inn into one of Weston’s first fine dining establishments, where members of the arts often dined. Purchasing and renovating properties along Newtown Turnpike, Ms. De Lamar then leased them to up-and-coming artists. She was a life-long patron of the arts and supported the careers of many architects, artists, choreographers and writers — often anonymously. She also supported environmental and social organizations. In 1969, she donated the land to the Aspetuck Land Trust for the 21-acre Stonebridge Waterfowl Preserve in Wilton.

Stonebrook, a treasured piece of Weston history, has been well maintained and cared for over the years and is ideally suited to everyday living and entertaining. Its gourmet kitchen, designed by Smallbone of London, offers an escape for the family chef to create meals for casual dining or lavish entertaining. The dining room can easily accommodate 16+ for a formal dinner. The family room is reminiscent of an English pub with full antique/pewter bar and cozy stone fireplace. Open the pub French doors to the fieldstone patios and terraces to enjoy life al fresco. The living room with vaulted ceiling is perfect for cocktails & conversation or as a quiet spot to curl up next to a roaring fire. The loft makes a charming work-from-home office. The master suite is the ultimate luxury with his/hers baths and walk-in closets plus a cozy sitting room with fireplace.

The lifestyle at Stonebrook offers options for entertaining on every scale or peaceful privacy. Don’t let this opportunity slip away…a rare chance to own an iconic landmark.
