The Payne-Rice house is a beautiful, fully restored 1870s Victorian home.
Built for Romulus Payne, a tobacco magnate, this home has been restored with the character of the time period and architecture kept to heart. This home has only had four owners in it’s 150 year lifespan, including the Rice family (for whom the house is partially named), and local historian James Brawley who was a writer for the Salisbury Post.
The front door from the front porch features the original doorbell and etched red glass. It opens into an expansive front hall showcasing the lovely wrap around staircase.
The rooms have been elegantly painted using colors from the time and original colors found within the home, and the floors are true heart pine.
The doors, trim, banister and upstairs floors have the original 1870s finish.
The original kitchen has been updated, but has kept the elegance of the Victorian era with real white Carrera marble, stainless appliances and dark cherry finished cabinets with bubble glass in the cabinet doors.
The downstairs bath was restored to the art deco feel of the 1920s when it was most likely added to the home. It features the original claw foot tub, and has an added sunflower showerhead, allowing it to be used as a full bath. The sink vanity is a converted wash stand with a sit on top basin and faucet.
The upstairs bath is completely modern with a walk-in shower complete with spa quality, multi head fixture, yet still keeps a wonderful vintage feel with lovely black and white tile, and a real white quartz vanity top. There is a small area outside this bath, which makes for a roomy dressing area.
The living area has floor-to-ceiling bookcases as well an arched floor to ceiling window, and has been designed to resemble a Victorian or an Edwardian library or reading room. However, the bookcases are not built in and could be removed to convert it into a first floor master bedroom with closet and direct entrance into the downstairs bath.
The formal dining room is huge and features a fireplace, a large closet, and a reproduction gas lighting fixture. It has been meticulously hand painted, and has picture and chair railings giving this room a feeling of true opulence.
The upstairs master bedroom is above the dining room and shares its extensive dimensions, allowing the freedom of larger furnishings or a bedroom with sitting area and its own fireplace.
Downstairs, there is also a study with its own fireplace, large windows, and separate access to the dining room. It is currently used as a home office, but could also be a small living area if the current one is converted to a master bedroom.
The second bedroom upstairs has a fireplace that was converted to coal in the late teens or 20s featuring beautiful pastel tile. It has been repainted to the color of the room at the time of the fireplace conversion. This room is complimented with a real cedar closet.
The third bedroom upstairs also has a full size fireplace, lovely windows on three sides and a closet.
Off the kitchen is a laundry room more than capable of accommodating a full size washer and dryer set and has cabinets and shelving for storage.
The roof is less than a year old, recently repainted, is insulated and has central heat and air
Lastly there is a 20×20 outbuilding with cement floor and large barn doors allowing it to be used as a shop or small garage.
