The Mrs. I.L. Crego House c.1870, is a spacious, brick home located on 2.50 acres in in the Town of Van Buren, a short distance outside the Village of Baldwinsville. When this home was constructed circa 1870 it cost $12,000 to build. That is equivalent to $271,000 in today’s market! This home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion C/Architecture. It was designed by Archimedes Russell a renowned architect in Central N.Y. post Civil War. Archimedes was a chameleon architect. He did not practice one specific style of architecture, but spared no expense to create an original design for each one of his clients. The Mrs. I.L. Crego Home illustrates the skill with which Russell practiced his craft. This Italianate style home features large glass windows to take advantage of views in all directions, and three porches. At the front of the home are original floor length two over two windows and a pair of wood entry doors. Louvered wooden shutters are present on all of the windows. Across the front of the home is a full-width porch, on the south side there is a small porch, and on the north side there is a large stone porch that is perfect for entertaining and al fresco dining. This historic home has been fully renovated to reflect the opulence and grandeur of the victorian era. The interior rooms include six bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. The kitchen and mudroom are adorned with custom Oak cabinetry modeled after the original cabinets in the home. Granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances that included a new stainless dishwasher. A built in bar add a modern touch to this vintage inspired kitchen. The upstairs laundry room features a new washer and dryer. The large formal dining room features a built in buffet, Chestnut Judges Paneling and a unique patterned Birch wood floor. Wide plank White Pine floors encompass the remainder of this home. The front parlor features the original marble fireplace and a large golden antique Pier Mirror. The foyer is adorned with the original Egyptian inspired Art-Deco wallpaper, a robust stair balustrade, and wide molded architraves on both interior windows and doors. Heritage Peonies, Japanese Rhododendron, Iris, Hydrangea, Lilac, Wisteria and a Chardonnay grape vine are among the perennial gardens that surround the home. Three of the historic barns remain on the property alongside a large in ground swimming pool surrounded by a newly installed stamped concrete patio and a black iron fence. The current owners that purchased this property in 2005, are only the second family to inhabit this home. They have retained the original Archimedes Russell drawings for the home that were given to them by the Crego family. As requested by William Crego, these plans along with the Pier Mirror that is located in the front parlor will remain with the home. The Mrs. I.L. Crego Home remains faithful to Archimedes Russell’s design as illustrated in the original drawings that led to its designation as a historically significant property on the National Register of Historic Places and New York State Office of Historical Preservation.
