Description

Built in the early 1920’s, this is one of only eight remaining significant sugar plantation manager’s homes on the Big Island of Hawaii. The main house features large spacious rooms, all with hard wood floors and 10’ high ceilings. The living room, dining room and screened in veranda flow smoothly together with beautiful airy ocean views. The highlight of the six main house bedrooms are the two upstairs suites which each feature private baths and sunrooms. The sunrooms provide the perfect spot to privately relax while enjoying elevated views of the ocean and coastline. Although some historical plans are dated 1918, the official permit closure was recorded as 1927. In the mid 50’s some major changes were done which included “modernizing” the interior walls and appearance. Since 1989 many of these changes have been painstakingly removed to bring back the charm of the original property. This includes restoring the wood floors, replacing windows, rebuilding the staircase railings, restoring French doors, rebuilding the fireplace mantel, and recreating the detailed ceiling molding. Wherever possible, original fixtures were kept or replaced with era correct pieces. The kitchen was remodeled in 1998 which brought back the original bead board walls and wood flooring. A butler’s pantry was incorporated into the kitchen to make it exceptionally spacious and a welcoming family gathering place. There are numerous other details and hidden treasures that make this a special home, including a “phone room” off the living room. The basement was originally used as maid’s quarters, and the current owners have used it as a home office and shop. The main house is centered on 5 acres of fenced and manicured lawn scattered with avocado trees, apple bananas, limes, lemons, oranges, tangerines and over 20 varieties of palms. Highlighting the landscape are five plumeria trees, each with different colors of flowers which have been on the property for over 70 years. Surrounding the main house are three additional structures, plus a hoop shade house and swimming pool. The two bedroom guest cottage includes a full bath and screened in porch. The garage has a one bedroom apartment built into the upper portion that includes a living area, dining area, full bath and kitchen. In addition, the garage includes two “tool” rooms and a storage container with a covered area. The last building is a stable / tack room. The stable, most recently used for plants and potting features a loft and watering trough. The property is located conveniently halfway between Hilo and Waimea in the quaint town of O’okala. O’okala offers the peace and quiet of being in the country while being minutes in either direction from schools, shopping and restaurants. To the North, Honokaa is 20 minutes away and along with standard amenities has a beautiful walkable main street featuring art galleries, antique stores and more. Another 20 minutes North is Waimea, the heart of “Paniolo” country, and a major destination with two large grocery stores and farmers markets. To the South, Papaaloa is 10 minutes away. The Papaaloa store has groceries, dining and on the weekends live local music. Continuing 30 more minutes South, Hilo offers just about anything that is needed including one of two major airports on the island.
