Don’t forget the abundance of wildlife. Just a few of the attractions in Oxbow, Maine, also known as Oxbow North. This recreational location as close to the entrance gate to the “North Maine Woods” as a person can get. Well groomed snowmobile trails, fishing in the Aroostook River, hunting the woods for game. Hike into Baxter State Park, check out the ghost trains in the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. Bring your kayak, canoe, paddles. Saddle up the ATV four wheeler.
Besides exploring outdoors in Northern Maine, look forward to returning to your Maine home at 1472 Oxbow Road. While Oxbow has been known as a long-standing forestry and agricultural community, its best feature is its friendly and caring people. And it is a community that welcomes newcomers. Rich in lumbering, farming traditions, Aroostook County is the “Crown Of Maine”.
“Its lines inspired by the Greek Revival Farmhouse Style with its symmetry, steep roof pitch, clapboard siding and wide moldings. While it was initially seen as a family camp retreat, new visions came into play because the idea of staying in Oxbow Maine was very appealing. There was so much to “like” about it. The project became a labor of love.”
Pam’s background in architectural and interior design and Bill’s experience in woodworking complemented the work of excellent local craftsmen, builders and stone masons. Everyone involved became quite attached and devoted to the remake.
The original 1900 main building structure was basically rebuilt in 2005 and 2006 maintaining the original schoolhouse lines. An addition on the east side constructed built to accommodate the kitchen, sun room mudroom and porch. Its roof height would provide for an additional upstairs bedroom. A dustpan roof was added on the west side to provide a sizable upstairs bathroom and expansion of the bedroom on the south side. Watch the video below.
Trim outside and inside was wider, higher and sometimes deeper than what is typically seen today—yet still with quite clean lines. Doors and windows were capped with a cove trim, and door stiles were given plinth bases.
Wood like cherry, red birch plus field and flat stone, granite, stone-like tiles and custom light fixtures added to the warmth and character of the Maine home. Places for sitting in a comfortable chair to read or relax became abundant. While everything in the interior changed, the new living/dining room was made to be as large and open as it was in the original Maine schoolhouse.
The open concept of the center granite wall and Harmon wood stove in the kitchen backed by a fireplace wall in the living room provided excellent circulation of both heat and traffic as well as beauty. An exceptional quality glass and screen enclosure for the living room fireplace prevents heat loss and add ambience. The Maine home design is clean and simple providing opportunity for traditional, country, casual or somewhat contemporary decor.
The Maine barn is classic. It has the same roof line and architectural features as the house. Lots of space! And it has a fabricated chimney and wood stove in the workshop. The Garden House (which could become something else of your choosing) together with the wood shed complement the main building and barn. There is plenty here to keep a person busy and active or to entice him or her to relax and just enjoy the surroundings! Learn about simple living in Maine.
There is lots to be excited about with this Maine home and three out buildings. Granite counter tops, red birch and tile flooring, natural stone, open front porch, private rear deck. Clean oil hot water zoned heating. Wood stove and heat pump options too. Enjoy built ins like book cases, pocket doors, under eave drawers and cabinetry. A first floor bedroom, jet tub, laundry all add to the living space utility.
