Hand-Hewn Log Cabin

12626 Sawmill Rd, Hesston, Penn Township, Huntingdon County, PA 16647, USA
$385,000

Description

My grandfather logged the woods in Pennsylvania with mules and bought the William Beaver farm with this two-story log home in the early 1900s. He sold it to his sons – my father and his brother – and it served as the family summer place for decades. It originally stood in a valley near the Raystown branch of the Juniata River. In the early 1970s the Army Corps of Engineers took land in this area as part of its plan to dam the river and create Raystown Lake, now the largest lake entirely in the state. The lake serves as a major recreation area as well as a source of hydroelectricity, but those whose land was to be flooded had the choice of leaving their homes and barns behind or moving them. I found 50 acres of land not far from the lake and moved the cabin onto the site – complete with the original outhouse. My family has used the house as a hunting camp ever since then, so it has remained as it was originally built in 1836, with hand-hewn logs and wide chinking. There is a full basement with a wood-burning furnace, a screened porch that looks out over Tussy Mountain, where on a summer night you can hear owls call as they hunt the hills. There’s a small Vermont Castings wood stove to sit around, and gas refrigerator and lights. There are power lines within easy reach of the property and a drilled well, but we used the camp in its original rustic state, hunting for deer and turkey as soon as we stepped out the door. Spending time in the cabin is like stepping back into a past century. If you ever dreamed of living in a real log cabin, this is your dream realized, with the added attraction of a 27-mile long lake nearby for boating and fishing, surrounded by acres of prime hunting land. There’s ample shopping and dining available in nearby Huntingdon, home to Juniata College and a handsome downtown with historic brick residences and civic buildings dating back to the mid-19th century.
