The home and the town have enjoyed a lot of interesting history, thanks to the builder Charles Pennington. He grew up in England and when the home was being built in 1909 the lumber was shipped here to Sumner from England. Notice the solid oak staircase in the front foyer. The home has hardwood floors, pocket doors, French doors, large picture windows, leaded glass windows and china cupboard, an oak ice box that has been built-in, tin ceiling in the spacious kitchen, a library, sun room, along with a large dining room and den/office with a bath and laundry room. The upper level has an owner’s suite, bath with 2nd set of laundry, and 2 additional bedrooms with another full bath. The lower level has been completely renovated to include 2 bedrooms, family room, kitchen, and bath. This was additional living quarters when it was the Pennington House B & B from 2006- 2013. Many opportunities if you want to Live the Dream in a B & B, rent out the living quarters in the lower level or simply enjoy the home all to yourself.

The attached garage has a work area that is heated and once was a business itself.  The home has many large leaded windows, that brings in natural light and at night with the indoor lightning the house lights up for all the world to see. The home sits on a prominent corner in Sumner, IA (Midwest population of 2000) and is walking distance to downtown.

A bit about the Pennington Supply Company owned by Charles Pennington, referred to by Charlie was a hardworking man who owned several buildings in town which were used for his business of supplying what creameries needed through the region. He had a butter tub factory of which tubs were made for butter and shipped on rail to other distributors.

Charles also owned 3 farms outside of Sumner. Charlie never learned how to drive a car; he hired a lady to chauffer him around. He also walked on the railroad tracks out to oversee his farms. One of the larger farms is in the Pennington Trust in which helps support the Sumner Memorial Hospital even today. At one time he also had the Charles Hotel here until it burned as Sumner’s oldest landmark in 1951. Charles was an Icon in the community of Sumner Iowa. If you walk into the local Sumner Memorial Hospital today you would see a wall with pictures of Charles Pennington and all his accomplishments. He cared for his home and the community. He wanted to make sure it was taken care of after his passing. Thanks to the current and past owners who have meticulously restored and maintained this home and have made it what it is today. Come take a look at this truly magnificent home that anyone would be proud to own.
