About This Old House

Adjacent to the French Quarter in what is a replete 19th century garden neighborhood, sits the Auguste Tete House. As a 19th century New Orleans’ population exploded from the wealth of sugar cane and cotton, neighborhoods sprung out from the French Quarter boundaries onto Esplanade Ave. which flourished with the construction of palatial garden residences.

With the renown master architect and builder, Henry Howard as designer and overseer of construction, Auguste Tete House was completed in 1882. Being the most sought after architect of 19th century Louisiana, he completed his last known commission here with the beautiful Auguste Tete House. Howard was duly acclaimed for his ability to structurally secure foundations upon the water saturated ground of the area. His exquisite design ability and construction expertise, enabled him to produce seemingly grand scale masterpieces of even his smallest projects. A fantastic new book of his life and work is available and sought after by historians and architects nationwide, “Henry Howard, Louisiana’s Architect”, by Robert Brantley and Howard ancestor, Victor McGee.

Tete House sits on some of the highest ground in the city and has withstood the effects of hurricanes, financial depressions, floods and even neglect, but somehow has survived as a thing of beauty and admiration. Once known to have been a “speak easy” during prohibition, it has been respectfully restored over fourteen years by the current owner and now awaits another loving family ready to add a new and enjoyable chapter to its colorful history.
