Own a piece of PINEHURST HISTORY with this stunning home built in 1929 by Donald J. Ross, the legendary golf course designer. One of the first five homes in historic Knollwood Heights, this property is conveniently located near Pinehurst No. 2, Mid Pines and Pine Needles – three of Ross’ finest creations. The stately facade is reminiscent of a Scottish manor house, which is appropriate given Ross was born in Dornoch, Scotland and began his career at St Andrews in 1899.
Christened ”Dunross” by the current owners, the gracious 2.3-acre estate features a 6000+ sq ft main home, carriage house with a one bedroom, two bath apartment located above a three-car garage, and a 1900 sq ft workshop devoted to the husband’s passion for vintage car and motorcycle restoration. The property offers a spectacular setting for outdoor entertaining with its extensive gardens, magical nighttime lighting, multiple brick terraces and walkways, koi pond, massive wood-burning fireplace, and outdoor kitchen with new built-in natural gas Viking grill and refrigerated drawers, plus a two- burner gas cooktop and sink. Children adore the treehouse and enjoy having a special place to call their own.
Gardening enthusiasts will love the hundreds of azaleas, camellias, gardenias, and hydrangeas that blanket the estate. The romantic Victorian greenhouse imported from Belgium is perfect for nurturing seedlings for the 36’x38′ raised bed vegetable and flower garden. The lighted maiden fountain at the center of the garden welcomes a steady stream of pollinators and provides a relaxing backdrop for enjoying cocktails in the garden seating area adjacent to the greenhouse. Maintenance of the grounds is made easier with two RainBird irrigation controllers, configured into thirty plus zones with hundreds of sprinkler heads, all fed by the property deep well with 220-volt submersible pump.
A solid wood Tudor arch door with unique “Speakeasy” style window welcomes all who enter Dunross. From the foyer, one enters the elegant living room, accented by original 12″ crown molding, hardwood floors, and an offset fireplace, conveniently updated to remote-controlled natural gas. An identical fireplace can also be found in the adjacent Carolina room, along with breathtaking views of the grounds. The fabulous chefs’ kitchen easily accommodates an intimate dinner party or a full catering staff with
its Viking Professional gas range and nearby warming drawer, Gaggenau convection oven with a special baking stone for pizza and breads, a Sub Zero built-in side-by-side refrigerator plus under counter double refrigerated drawers in the island, KitchenAid dishwasher, disposal, two sinks, and miles of marble countertops. The lovely dining room, lit by a gorgeous crystal chandelier and showcasing two lighted corner cabinets along with stunning crown molding, is perfect for larger or more formal gatherings. Serve pre-dinner cocktails in the bar overlooking the rear brick terrace and fireplace. Mixologists will love the built in Scotsman ice maker, under counter refrigerator, sink, and marble countertops, along with enough shelf space to hold hundreds of bottles or stemware. The screened porch with newly installed outdoor awnings, ceiling-mounted infrared heaters, and remote-controlled clear Fenetex screens offers the ideal spot for morning coffee or anytime relaxation.
Ascend the graceful staircase, accented overhead by an Italian Rococo 25 light chandelier, to the second-floor master suite, two large guest bedrooms connected by a Jack and Jill bathroom, one additional guest bath across the hall, and office space perfect for “work from home” due to its direct Ethernet connection, abundant shelving, and privacy provided by double entry French doors. The master suite clearly dominates the upstairs floor plan with its generous dimensions, remote-controlled natural gas fireplace, connecting sitting room, his and her walk-in closets and bathrooms, and a shared oversized steam shower. “Her” bathroom also provides the perfect setting for bubble baths with an old-fashioned slipper tub positioned by a bank of windows showcasing the rear gardens. A fully functional cable driven birdcage elevator can be used to travel between the first and second floors, if desired.
The rear wing of the house, accessed by a separate staircase, features an upstairs third guestroom and full bath, plus downstairs family room, which can also be entered from the rear brick terrace via two double- entry French doors. The fully finished basement currently contains a large workout space, home theater system, laundry room and full bath (directly accessible from the outdoor kitchen), Fisher Paykel refrigerator, additional storage space and the owners’ EuroCave wine storage units. A dedicated electrical panel was installed to support wine storage, enabling an easy conversion of the space to a 3000-bottle cellar.
The 1900 sq ft workshop was constructed in 2018 by Dunagan Builders. It includes an office space, kitchenette, washer/dryer connections and half bath that are heated and cooled by a 9000 BTU 16 SEER Trane ductless mini split heat pump system. The main workshop features multiple infrared gas heaters, high performance commercial ceiling fans for cooling, an insulated metal ceiling, 220-volt power, and three rolling steel doors. The exterior of the building is designed to complement its residential location, and the space could be readily repurposed to function as a pool house, entertainment area, or secondary guest accommodations.
All renovations and additions were approached from the perspective of honoring and preserving the property’s special history. The original slate roof has been completely refurbished, and new copper valleys, gutter, downspouts, collector boxes, and gutter guards installed on both the main home and the carriage house. The 37 original leaded glass casement windows provide wonderful natural light throughout the home and are now fully functional, following a two-and-a-half-year restoration project. The interior walls, ceilings, and floors of the main house have been completely stripped and refinished by highly skilled craftsmen. All four of the HVAC units supporting the main home have been replaced with 15.5 SEER Lenox Elite Series units controlled by NEST Wi-Fi thermostats, and a new duct system installed. The plumbing system has been upgraded with two new 80-gallon Bradford White water heaters, a recirculation pump, RainSoft drinking water system and EC4 water conditioning system, a QRS whole house carbon tank and sediment filter, and a 6-gallon heater under the kitchen sink. Exterior drainage systems have been re-engineered, dysfunctional French drains replaced, new systems added where needed, and ones with continuing value power flushed. The entire estate is protected by a security system with 18 ethernet-wired cameras that can be monitored remotely. The underlying technological support for this system includes a 1GB Wi-Fi mesh network that covers the property via CAT6a cable connecting the network head-end to an outdoor point-to-point bridge that extends coverage to the workshop. Other access points are positioned in various locations to ensure reliable service and support the multiple Sonos units that control music streaming throughout the property.
