This National Register Victorian is one of the earliest homes built by the prominent Hawley family as a rental cottage, it was part of their 1900 real estate development called Taconic Avenue. These homes catered to wealthy families coming from cities to Vermont, to escape the summer heat. The homes were built with modern conveniences of the time, running water, electricity, radiator heat and indoor plumbing. Dunean is the original name of the house and it was built prior to the date the National Register has on file and has period paints, wallpapers, and décor (Bradbury & Bradbury, Wm. Morris, etc.)

A prior owner’s son gave us information about historical features of the house, many we were able to restore. People from the Wilson House in East Dorset, VT, shared their research. They revealed that Dunean was purchased in 1923 by Mr. and Mrs. George Hornell Thacher, Jr. of Albany, NY. This prestigious family’s roots go back to 1635 in America. Thomas Thacher was the first pastor of the Old South Meeting House in Boston, MA. Three family members were Mayor of Albany, NY. Prior owner, George Thacher, Jr. frequently played golf with Robert Todd Lincoln and they were two of the founding members of Ekwanok Country Club.

Thacher’s youngest son, Ebby, garnered much attention. His activities caused some family embarrassment and his exploits at Dunean and in Manchester are rather legendary. His adventures often occurred with his friend Bill W. It was because of Ebby Thacher’s friendship that Bill W. became the cofounder of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Dunean has been well loved and cared for and has seen much in over 100 years! The home offers a wonderful atmosphere for entertaining guests.

Dunean is currently offered at $41,000 below assessed value. The total living area on the property is approximately 6,300 finished sq.ft on a .67 acre lot. There is a main house with 4,944 finished sq.ft., 6 bedrooms, 5 full and 2 half-baths and a large wrap-around front porch, plus an additional 1,965 sq. feet of storage in the basement, and a carriage barn with 1-car garage/storage area of 780 sq.ft. and a 1,300 sq. ft, 2-bedroom, 1 bath apartment or in-law suite. The eat-in period style kitchen has three marble counter tops, 2 sinks, 2 ovens, dishwasher, disposal, trash compacter, microwave, 2 pantries, a vintage 1900 Quaker Prize range/oven modified to have electric oven and burners with down-draft with a functioning woodburning section. The kitchen has an open Southern Yellow pine staircase to the 2nd and 3rd floors and sliding glass doors to a rear garden area.

Enter the master suite through French doors into a foyer, followed by the master bedroom, and hallway with his and hers private full bathrooms with marble countertops. His bathroom has a shower and Her bathroom has a shower and a large Jacuzzi chroma therapy bathtub. The master suite also has a heated sunporch/exercise room and 4 closets (one with potential stack washer/dryer). The second bedroom has a fireplace and private bathroom with pedestal style bathtub/shower, towel warmer and marble countertop. The 3rd second floor bedroom also has a private bathroom with shower and granite countertop. The third floor has 3 bedrooms, hall full bathroom with clawfoot tub/shower and a large walk-in storage room.
