Deacon David Warner House, Circa 1775: STRUCTURE ONLY

Aquebogue, NY, USA
$10,000

Description

This lovely little home, originally built in the late 1700s, is thought to be one of the oldest surviving houses in the Jamesport area on Long Island’s North Fork.  It is an example of the original vernacular farmhouse style, story-and-a-half side gable, shingle-sided houses now commonly referred to by realtors as “Cape Cod.”  The house is believed to have been originally owned by Deacon David Warner, who died in 1853.  According to historical records, the Warners were one of the families descended from the first Puritan settlers who arrived in the East end of the North Fork in the 1630s.

The Warner house was moved in 1981 to its current location in Aquebogue.  It had previously been moved twice, first from Manor Lane to Main Road in Jamesport, and then from Main Road to 6th St. in 1968.  The prior owners purchased the house in 1976.  According to their sons, their mother fell in love with the house and just “had to have it.”  Five years later, they moved the house from 6th St. to its current location.  They considered moving it by boat but decided to move it overland.  In order to clear some low hanging power lines along the route, the roof of the house was cut and collapsed, and then re-erected at the new location.

The central part of the house is the original construction.  The kitchen portion of the house was added in the mid-1800s, and the first bathroom some time after that.  A master bedroom extension with bathroom was added in 1987.  A covered porch and decking was also added sometime after the move in the 1980s.  The roof was replaced over the first floor kitchen and bathroom in 2017, and on the main house and master bedroom in 2010.  Currently, the house is approximately 1300 square feet, with 989 square feet on the first floor and 308 square feet on the second floor.  It has 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths downstairs and one half bath upstairs.

The original framing appears to have been mostly replaced, or supported with “sistered” beams. The house features dark stained wide plank flooring downstairs and narrow, painted boards upstairs, which either replaced or covered over original materials, wood-clad ceilings and stained glass hanging lights in the main living area and kitchen, clawfoot bathtub and cast iron wood stove/fireplace, custom wooden kitchen counter top, cabinets and drawers.  The wood flooring and ceiling appears to me of relatively recent vintage, having either replaced or covered over older materials.  Appliances include a nearly new water heater, dishwasher, refrigerator, washer, dryer, electric oven and cooktop, air conditioner condenser, oil furnace, oil tank, and air handler.  A large exterior cedar deck may also be removed and taken with the house.

The house is being offered for $10,000, or best offer, plus all costs relating to moving it from its current location to another site.  No land is included in this offer.  Buyer is responsible for finding a new location, and any permitting and other necessary arrangements for moving the house.
