About This Old House

This stunning Federal Period home, c. 1795, is named The Coon Tavern after its first owner, Ross Coon, a self-proclaimed minister and doctor who “kept a fine bar.” The three-bedroom, two-bath home has been sensitively restored to blend period detail with modern amenities. Historic features include wide pine flooring, five working Rumford fireplaces, 12-over-12 windows, many with original glass, and antique door hardware.

Modern upgrades include a four-oven AGA cooker, authentic reproduction lighting fixtures, Sub-Zero appliances, and wiring for internet and cable. The 3,400 s.f. home includes a first-floor master bedroom. The spacious country kitchen and pantry both feature granite countertops and sinks and hand-planed Kennebec Company cabinetry. A mudroom contains a double soapstone laundry sink, custom cabinets and a stacking Miele washer and dryer. There is an office with a wood stove and exposed beams and a south-facing sunroom. The three-acre lot features a stone patio, established perennial gardens, and a 19th century post-and-beam barn with a workshop and attached milk shed.

The picturesque shire town of Haverhill Corner, NH hosted circuit court sessions during the late 18th century and well into the 19th century. The historic courthouse still stands on the village green, as do many of the taverns which were needed to accommodate visitors having business before the courts. Located on the Connecticut River only a half-hour’s drive from Dartmouth College and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, the village of Haverhill Corner is close to the White Mountains for hiking, fishing, skiing and beautiful scenery.
