READ MORE on the history of its construction and renovations over many years… This home on 1423 N. Nevada provides a balanced blend of classic architecture and modern conveniences. This has been the result of careful upgrades by the previous three owners of the property who have upgraded it from its original use as a multi-family building to a comfortable and functional home for living and entertaining.  Originally the home was a five-unit apartment building with the back yard being a parking area for vehicles. Rooms were rented to couples and service men during World War II.  This included a basement apartment with its own private entrance that still exists.  The south garage appears to have been a stable and one can still see places where an inpatient horse gnawed at the stable walls.  The upstairs of the building were individual apartments which accounts for the wide hallway and dual stairs.  During the 1970s Mr. Rex Slaughter, a well-known architect in Colorado Springs (a driving force for creating the Old North End Historical District), acquired the home for his family and began a deliberate remodeling and modernization of the home.  This included the expansion of the home to include a kitchen, rewiring and opening up the central part of the front of the house to a more spacious and open concept. To maintain the character of the home several elements were acquired from other period homes, such as the period ceiling in the front room, the unique barber wall in the family room and
multi-pane pocket and French doors. A good illustration of the care that was taken in the remodel, the trim work was not simply painted over, but rather stripped and refinished to expose the elegant wood beneath them. In cases where trim had to replaced, custom pieces were made – with extra pieces still stored in basement and garage.  Although the house was originally wired with “knob and tube,” this has all been abandoned and new wiring installed.  Subsequent inspections have found no aluminum wiring. Nor has any asbestos been found as the construction of the house pre-dates when asbestos was routinely used.  In 2005 the home was acquired by Rick Taylor who was a General Contractor in Colorado Springs who added his own improvements, including upgrade of the bathrooms on first and second floor. He also retrofitted a portion of the south garage into a workshop which as proven to be a great place to work on projects without the noise and dust associated with table saws and the like entering the home. The current owner acquired the property in 2016 as both a personal residence and an office/studio and began their own series of improvements including converting the smallest bedroom on the upper level to laundry room, and mud room was opened up with relocation of laundry machines. added new electrical and separate meter for garages in order to remove overhead power line that ran across back yard.
