Center Hall Colonial with a Unique Baseball History

1 Scenery Rd, Pittsburgh, PA 15221, USA
$398,000

Description

In 2007, when the couple first saw the rundown home at 1 Scenery Road, they knew they had found their special place.

Not only did it seem like the perfect all-American home but it held an interesting history. Pirates Hall of Fame Manager and local Wilkinsburg boy Bill McKechnie started construction on the home in 1925 just after the Pirates won the World Series.

The local newspaper called the house “One of the Prettiest Homes in Town.” The couple fell hard for the house and, with a combined background in historic preservation and interior design, they set out to restore it. The result? A showplace filled with light, color and surprises.

With respect to the historic character of the home and the traditional layout, they worked with a contractor to replace all the mechanicals, add new forced air heating, AC, and French drains, and re-wire, re-plumb and insulate the home. They stripped years of wallpaper, wood paneling and caked-on paint from the walls, woodwork and windows.

Once the underlying structure was improved it was time to bring the home to life. The owners splashed the walls with unexpected colors that was popular at the time the home was built in the 20s. Step inside the large entry and you are greeted by gleaming white oak hardwood floors and blush colored walls that set the lively tone for the rest of the residence.

Adamant about keeping the original center hall layout of the home, the kitchen took over two spaces. It now runs along one of the glass lined wings of the home, adjacent to a sunny corner window seat. As former restaurateurs, the owners wanted a kitchen that could host some serious cooking, so they installed a professional Jenn Air gas stove topped by a dramatic hood and flanked by decorative corbels and columns. A double sized stainless refrigerator straddles the two spaces, which also include two sinks, two dishwashers and a double oven tucked downstairs. Glazed buttercream raised panel cabinets contrasts with the rich wood top of the farmhouse kitchen island and give a warm backdrop to the crisp white tile backsplash and marble counters.

On the second floor, four bedrooms are illuminated by the daylight through the many new windows. One more flight up is a charming bonus space with nearly 900 square feet including a guest suite with bedroom and full bath, plus a large dormered room ideal as a playroom, office or artist’s studio.

More exceptional features are found outside. The large yard and lush landscaping are a gardener’s delight with mature trees shading the flagstone front patio in the summer. One of the most charming elements is the little playhouse in the yard. The owners considered tearing it down but after coming across a passage in ‘The Deacon’s’ Daughter, written by Carol McKechnie, they decided to keep it. Carol’s book recounted stories of visiting ball players. One day in 1941 the Cincinnati Reds, in town for her sister’s wedding, all crowded into her playhouse to listen to the radio her father had installed as Joe DiMaggio broke Willie Keeler’s hitting record.

Located at the gateway to Pittsburgh’s East End and just off the Greensburg Pike Exit of the Parkway East, the home is only two miles from Regent Square and Frick Park, three miles to Bakery Square, six miles to the PA Turnpike and an easy commute to Downtown.
