About This Old House

The Cason-Veal House in Jewell, Georgia is an early Plantation Plain house on 2.5 acres of land. The house includes many of its original features, including wide plank paneling on several interior walls and front porch, hand-cut dentil moldings, and scored plaster detailing on the exterior of the chimneys. The primary massing of the house is a two over two with no central hall. The shed addition features a small kitchen and full bath. An addition was removed from the east side of the house but remains standing next to the house. The house was built by either William Cason or his son Adam. Adam Cason was a successful farmer and land owner both before and after the Civil War, at one time operating a cotton gin in the area.

The Cason-Veal House has been stabilized, with the beginning stages of a restoration begun. Unfortunately, a new owner is needed to carry on the project. Recent updates include custom nine-over-six true divided light wood windows, custom interior doors, removal of some modern materials on the interior, updated electrical service, and a new well. Plumbing for the kitchen and bath will need to be repaired. Issues that remain to be addressed include masonry on the chimneys, exterior siding and paint, some termite damage, and some interior finishes. The property includes an outbuilding with many materials collected for the restoration effort.
