388 S. Green St. Tuckerton, NJ was the home of my great grandfather, Wilbur C. Parker, the captain of the Mattie Porter. The ‘Porter’ was the last oyster schooner built by Van Zant boatworks in Port Republic, NJ.
The home is 129 years old; only 7 people have ever resided here. The home is furnished with local artifacts and a large collection of my great grandmother’s original paintings of the area. She descended from the town’s founding Andrews family. My great grandfather’s family has lived on the Jersey Shore since 30 years after the Pilgrims landed. Narrated original photographs and genealogy resources are included in the sale.
The home is built from unbled yellow pine transported here on the Mattie Porter from Virginia. The upstairs bedrooms were not complete when my grandfather was born in September 1896; so he was born in the living room. My mother was born in the front bedroom.
All original furnishings, local and ship artifacts, and artwork are restored to museum quality and included in the sale. These contents were professionally valued at $36,570 by Martine M. White, Accredited Senior Appraiser, Principal, Bernards Appraisal Associates, LLC. A binder of documentation, references, and photos is available, and Bernards will provide an electronic version of this document at no cost upon request.
Attached files named named ‘Wilbur Parker’ and ‘NJ Historic Preservation’ provide historical background for the property.
I obtained a Letter of Map Amendment (LOMA) to designate exclusion of this property from the contiguous wetlands which are at a higher flood risk. I also obtained an elevation certificate from East Coast Engineering proving it is above the 100 year flood zone. This qualifies the property for a flood insurance discount. The LOMA and Elevation Certificate are attached.
Chapter 255 Zoning Article III is attached to document that the property is zoned marine commercial and could be used as a bed and breakfast or other business, if associated with a marine business. There are 7 commercial marinas within walking distance of the home. Two of these have associated waterfront restaurants.
I petitioned the Army Corps of Engineers and DEP Regulatory and Enforcement Divisions to keep the 17 acres of land surrounding the property preserved. After 38 years, I succeeded, when the Ocean County Natural Lands Trust Fund bought it. A news article describing the preservation of the 17 surrounding acres is attached.
