About This Old House

You want a more peaceful life for you and your family.
We live in a world that for many of us is moving too fast in directions we aren’t comfortable with. As you drive down Old Mill Road into the small secluded valley along the river, you enter the 18th Century and leave the modern world behind.
Want to relax?

Spring, Summer and Fall, the front porch is washed with soft breezes. Especially in the Spring and Fall, the back patio is a blissful place for entertaining friends – or yourselves.

Want to beat the heat? Take a chair down by the river – the temperature is 15 degrees cooler!
What do you hear? The song of birds, the babble of the river, and silence.
Put your canoe or kayak in the river next to the house and paddle up the Passaic River into the Great Swamp or down river through Long Hill Township. Millington is located near miles of walking and bike trails including the Patriot Path through Morris County and the nearby Somerset County Environmental Education Center and the Raptor Trust.

The historical core of the house, a three-story bank house in vernacular “I House” 2×2 style, is essentially unchanged since the 1750s: original wide board floors, original wainscoting and trim, original windows and doors on the first floor, working fireplaces and mantelpieces.

The den, also with original wide board floors was added in the early 1800’s. The kitchen, while modern, sits on the original stone foundation. Relax in front of the fire in the living room or entertain guests in the dining room and you are sharing in a history that goes back more than 270 years.

This house and the neighboring 47 Old Mill Road were the center of Millington for 150 years: post office, general store, blacksmith shop, grain mill, lumber mill, and forge.

While the house’s historical character has been lovingly preserved, all the essential systems have been modernized: electricity, plumbing, septic, and heating. The new oil tank is safely above ground. Just move in. You don’t have to do anything.

You can add additional bedrooms over the kitchen while staying in the existing footprint of the house. The outside office can easily and affordably be expanded to provide a two-car garage. The barn can be turned into a separate house with its own septic system.
