Description

The Historic Abraham Shepherd House, circa 1759, is one of the most important and elegant homes in Jefferson County. This grand brick Federal-style home features: spacious rooms, a large gourmet kitchen, antique heart pine and solid cherry wood floors and five fireplaces with carved wood mantels. Tastefully updated with the latest conveniences: granite counter-tops, stainless steel appliances, jetted tub. The lovely, large, and private back yard with mature landscaping and a period smokehouse adjoins the Shepherd Grist Mill property. This affords views of the working water wheel and its extraordinary stone mill house. The sound of the Town Run streaming by as it works its way through the mill and flows along the perimeter of this property enhances the already tranquil setting – a true sanctuary. Enjoy the rhythmic turning of the wheel and the sounds of the brisk stream from this private backyard. This is a home of rare and beautiful distinction. It is walking distance to the shops, restaurants, and entertainment of historic Shepherdstown yet accessible to Washington, DC via MARC commuter train.

Who was Captain Abraham Shepherd? Captain Abraham Shepherd was a Patriot in the Revolutionary War, along with his four older brothers. They are believed to be the sole incidence of five brothers having all fought during the Revolution.  Captain Shepherd distinguished himself in battle on numerous occasions.  He was the ninth of ten children born to Shepherdstown, West Virginia, founder Thomas C. Shepherd, and his wife, Elizabeth (VanMeter). He married Eleanor (Strode) on December 27, 1780 and fathered six children. He died at the age of 69 on September 7, 1822.

Also of Note… From 1973 until his death in 1990, Ira Glackens, son of renowned artist William Glackens, lived in the Abraham Shepherd House.  Ira was a noted historian with numerous books and articles to his credit.  Ira hung his father’s paintings in the house until 1979.  The silk screened wallpaper border in the dining room was made from plates brought back from Padua, Italy by Ira.

A Place to Call Home …Historic Shepherdstown is located in Jefferson County, West Virginia, along the Potomac River.  Chartered in 1762 (predating the Revolutionary War), it is arguably the oldest town in the state.  A mere 90 minutes from Washington, DC, yet a world away, the town offers an extraordinary blend of history, culture, nature, sporting activities, academia (home to Shepherd University), and entertainment. Among the many amenities here is the Contemporary American Theater Festival (http://catf.org ).  This festival brings in world class playwrights and actors.  Shepherdstown frequently garners a spot on “Best Of” lists for small town livability and great places to visit.

Shepherd Grist Mill …..Having received 222 acres in a land grant from King George II, Thomas Shepherd founded and settled in Shepherdstown in 1732. Five years later the Shepherd Grist Mill was built.  It was the largest milling facility in the area, drawing people from nearby states.  During the high time of milling, the mill most likely had five burr wheels operating at the same time.  There is one burr wheel present today, but all the gears are intact, so much so that with the installation of a few belts, the mill could grind grain once again.  The structure is made of the finest stone work in the state of West Virginia.  The overshot wheel was made by the Fitz Foundry in Martinsburg, WV in 1894 and at 40 feet in diameter, is the second largest overshot wheel in the world. The mill is registered on the Federal and State Historic Registers.
