1900s Hardware Store with Apartment, River View, Antique Store, Barber Shop, Nature Trail

273 Main St, Cairo, WV 26337, USA
$49,500

Description

PLEASE READ ALL THE WAY TO THE BOTTOM 🙂 This building seriously has everything – rolling wooden library ladders, original fixtures, ornate wood and glass cabinetry, lofted filigreed tin ceilings, all with a river view on the edge of a state park surrounded by trees and mountains. Oh, it even has an apartment, an antique store, a barber shop, and enough extra space for roller skating.

The RC Marshall Hardware Building opened as Greer Supply Company in 1902, when Cairo, WV (the location before you click says Justice, WV, but the map here with the listing is accurate. Located in Cairo, West Virginia) was flush with an oil boom and also a major railroad hub. It became the heart of this little town a few years later, when Clyde Marshall turned it into a general store. On the ground floor, he sold everything from motor oil to baby rattles. It’s even said that Houdini once performed an escape on the roof! Clyde ran the business very successfully until his passing in the 1970s.

These days, much of the original shelving is still intact, along with the ladders and the lights (which have been converted to electric), but the ground floor of the building is largely occupied by an antique store (the merchandise is on consignment so it does not convey with sale UNLESS you form a relationship with the 3 consigners who own it).

The second floor used to hold the town’s telephone switchboard operation in one area, and a boarding house in the other. Where the switchboard operators once were is now like a classic wide open Soho artist loft style space, with exposed brick and floor to ceiling columns. A huge antique metal pully system runs along one side of the tin ceiling. All original to the building. You can also access the original freight elevator here (the elevator is in need of repair before it can carry people again). Where the boarding rooms were is now a spacious apartment, where my husband and I have lived for the past several years. In the early 2000s it was used as a bed and breakfast, which could easily be done again, since it has an entrance separate from the store. Nearly floor to (15 foot high) ceiling windows open to a view of the river just across the street, and in the summer bring in the loveliest breeze. No need for AC.

On the third floor, where Clyde maintained his furniture showroom, you’ll find a totally open space and massive cathedral windows as well as the big metal wheel and hemp rope that operate the freight elevator. This space has been mostly untouched for many years, and there are still lots of treasures to be unearthed from the building’s long history. I’ve found some over the years, dusted them off, and taken them downstairs for display.

Outside you’ll find a quaint, sleepy town with at least as much potential as the building itself. The old railroad line has become The North Bend Rail Trail, a hiking/biking/horse riding nature trail that runs right through Cairo, and connects to other trails through several states. There are a general store/bike supply, a diner, and town hall along the one block of Main Street. And the 1900s theatre next door has become an indoor rock climbing gym, and also offers excursions to nearby North Bend State Park. The little town post office is all original, even older than RC Marshall, with little gold leaf and brass post office boxes. The historic Bank of Cairo is a wee museum that runs tours on Saturdays. I ran and was handily elected to Town Council one year, and my husband was accidentally elected to Town Recorder once as a joke. Thankfully they accepted his polite decline of the position. If you’re not careful you’ll be offered the job of mayor.

There’s really no limit to what a person can do with this building. Over the years, we’ve hosted various events, parties, weekly yoga groups, loads of art projects, the antique store, motorcycle workspace, barber shop, among countless others, all while living in the apartment area. If you can dream it, you can do it here. Lately though, we’ve been traveling more, and our interests have become further flung. It’s time to let someone with a fresh vision and energy take the reigns – RC Marshall deserves it!
