614 High Street, know as the Stabler House, was named for its original owner Edward Stabler, who moved his Apothecary Business from England to Petersburg during the 1700’s. His off-springs later established the famous Apothecary Shoppe located in Old Towne Alexandria, Virginia. A testament to good craftsmanship this house survived the Civil War Period, which was a rare feat for homes in the Richmond Metro Area.
The property is located on High Street, a residential street that boost architectural period home that range from Georgian, Egyptian Revival,& Victorian set in the Old Towne Historic District of Petersburg. It is located two block from restaurants, shops, art studios and galleries. The art community is thriving and attracts many visitors with its Friday for the Arts Event.
The original house was a Two-over-Two consisting of four rooms that are 380 sq. ft each which are connected by a very showy hall with a wide staircase which includes a landing to the second floor. The dining room was added in the late 1800’s and boosts a whole wall floor to ceiling china cabinet. The banks of windows in the kitchen were salvaged from Stabler’s Apothecary Shoppe that was located at the end of High Street. The light and the openness of the home give it a very contemporary feel.
