About This Old House

Off-marketIdlewild is a raised hip-roofed center hall Greek Revival home with a five bay inset gallery classic in virtually every way but with charming vernacular idiosyncrasies of its own.Its most interesting and unusual feature might be the massive 12 foot tall two panel period doors leading to the principal rooms from the main hall. Their scale and that of the rooms and hallway is noteworthy. The original floor plan of the house is evident, though over the years galleries have been appropriately enclosed at the rear. The chimneys have been recently rebuilt; the foundation piers stabilized; and the exterior structure is in very good condition. Still it’s intact, well cared for, and it’s solid. The bathroom has adjoining closets and dressing areas, a tub with shower, and one lavatory. At different stages the original grounds surrounding the house were sold and today it has a smaller yard and is located on a city street in a developed residential area near the downtown area. The original smokehouse is on the property. Idlewild is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Henry Clay made a speech from this porch during his 1840s presidential campaign!
