About This Old House

Off-marketHistory: This storied stone estate was built in the early 1920s by Dr. and Mrs. Walton Martin. Dr. Martin was a highly regarded New York surgeon who married the New York socialite, Charlotte Bronson Hunnewell. While the estate was being constructed the locals referred to it as a castle, yet Mrs. Martin considered it a chateau. The residence was designed by architect, Edward C. Dean in the Storybook style which enjoyed a brief popularity during that era. The Martins had traveled extensively throughout Europe and collected artifacts and materials that were included in the construction. Many of the columns are from France and Italy and there is a 16th century Dutch beamed, painted ceiling among other ironworks. Rico Marola, a Torrington area contractor employed 100+ immigrants who dismantled the stone walls on the property and built the chateau and the outbuildings with these materials as well as other stone quarried nearby. The Property: The estate is reached by a mile-long private road. It is being offered on 275.5 acres and more land is available. The land features a brook, ponds, several waterfalls, open meadows, and gorgeous gardens. In addition to the main house are several additional buildings: a stone gatehouse with two 2-bedroom apartments, a 1-bedroom guest house adjacent to the pool and spa, a potting shed, a 3-stall horse barn with tack room, a chauffeur’s garage with an apartment above, and another garage, which together provide garaging for 18 cars. The property also has its own licensed helipad, one of a very few within Litchfield County. The Residence: The main house is comfortably proportioned and quite inviting. The mechanical systems are all very 21st century for maximum convenience and efficiency. Exquisite architectural details executed with old world craftsmanship enhance every room: High ceilings, beams, 9 fireplaces, mahogany paneling, chandeliers, arched doorways and windows. Patios are accessible from several rooms. The second level has two wings. One with the master suite and three bedrooms and the other “staff” wing has two bedrooms and two baths. The third level offers two additional bedrooms and a den.
