About This Old House

The Gilster House (Chester, Illinois ) sits on a bluff with a 180 degree view of the Mississippi River and Missouri Bottoms. Chester is a small community surrounded by much history and scenic landscapes.
The house was built by Mrs Jane Craig Douglas, a widow, who came from Scotland with a large group of relatives. She acquired an inheritance from her uncle, a cotton spinner for the Czar of Russia, which allowed her to purchase four lots in 1867 (ca). With these lots she acquired two school buildings and a cottage. The school buildings were previously private schools, one for boys and the other for girls. Eventually, one of the school buildings was moved to be attached to the home and converted into a large kitchen and dining area. The other school building is presently used as a garage. Later, Jane married Mr. McAdams and the home became to be known as the McAdams home. In 1951 (ca) the home was purchased by John and Ruth Gilster. John Gilster died in 1958 and Ruth continued to live in the house until her death. The house continues to remain in the Gilster family.
The house size is 2841 Sq. Ft. of living space plus 1632 Sq. Ft. of partially finished basement. The first floor of 1637 sq. ft. has a parlor, living room, dining room, kitchen, and bath; the second floor of 1204 sq. ft. has three bedrooms, a bath, and a parlor suitable for a small fourth bedroom. There are large back porches on both the upper and lower levels.
