About This Old House

Located in the former Western Reserve of Connecticut, now northeastern Ohio, this dwelling is an accurate reproduction of a mid-18th century New England saltbox house, updated for contemporary living, but minimizing the footprints of bathrooms and kitchen. Built with quality materials in 1963, the house is located on a short cul-de-sac road in a single-entrance older development, and had a single-owner with a maximum of three occupants. The 2-acre rural lot features a maturing oak/maple/beech forest and a rustic lawn with two stone patios, stone walks, flowering shrubs and spring-blooming bulbs, and winding woodland paths leading to spots of repose.
House has three entrances and two stairways for convenience and safety. Main formal entrance leads into both a formal dining room and a large formal living room with a fireplace, and built-in bookshelves and cupboards in library end of room; raised-panel, bi-fold-hinge wood interior shutters in both rooms. Large “keeping” room at rear of house features open beamed ceiling, wide tongue-and-groove paneling on two walls, and a large cooking fireplace with a crane and working bake oven. House has four large bedrooms: ground floor master bedroom with full bath; three large second-floor bedrooms, one with two dormer windows and window seats, and a full bath. House features large closets and/or cupboards in all rooms and hallways with additional second-floor walk-in storage running length of house at rear and an unfinished storage area over garage with drop-down stair access.
Interior doors throughout are 4-paneled with thumb latches and HL hinges; 12-over-12 double-hung windows throughout except keeping room, kitchen and downstairs bath (casement w/ diamond-shaped leaded panes); custom-milled chair rail, crown molding, and wainscoting variously throughout house; white oak floors of 5” and 7” widths throughout, except baths and kitchen; custom-built and finished cabinets in kitchen. A full basement is beneath both the main house and wing; forced-air gas heat and AC; well and septic.
Perhaps not a house for everyone, but for the right individuals this would be spectacular. In fact, this property is much more than just a house; it is a haven for the writer, the artist, the romantic, or anyone wishing for the beauty and tranquility of the woodlands to inspire their creative endeavors.
