About This Old House

This was once a grand mansion. The owner, David C. Cook was a worldwide distributor of religious materials. They had to expand the Elgin post office to accommadate his five million pieces of mail per month! The company is now in Boulder Co. Many of the interior details have been removed; many are left. Lots of very fancy tile and inlaid wood flooring. Additions to the building were made to become a nursing home. They will be taken off. The home is on the National Register so tax benefits are available. There are 50/50 grants available to restore the exterior up to $20,000 per year. Great neighborhood. Two single family mansions of similar size are nearby. The commuter train to Chicago is within walking distance.
