About This Old House

Birch Lodge and the Birch Lodge Motel, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, is available as a seasonal turn-key resort or private retreat for a preservation-minded buyer. The property is located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, just a half-hour drive north of St. Ignace and Mackinac Island, the state’s leading tourist destination. It is less than an hour to Tahquamenon Falls, Whitefish Point, Sault Ste. Marie, and beaches of three of the Great Lakes. The lodge is set on almost 20 acres with about ¼-mile of high frontage on 560-acre Big Trout Lake, and includes a sandy swimming beach. The lake is an all sports lake draining to the Carp River and is connected to Little Trout Lake, Frenchman’s Lake, and Wegwas Lake. The property backs on to the 30-acre Anna Badgley-Little Trout Lake Nature Preserve with some 4,000’ of frontage on Little Trout Lake.

Built in 1911-12, the10,000 sq. ft. lodge includes a 100-foot porch fronting on the lake, a large lobby, dining room, kitchen, and the “Birch Bar,” a classic 1950’s rustic northwoods “Tiki” bar complete with two working Seeburg jukeboxes (now used as a breakfast bar and lounge). Under the current owners, the lodge has undergone many updates including roof, electrical, plumbing, heating, a/c, septic and well. Renovations have converted the lodge into a five unit bed and breakfast (with three other units begun), while retaining the historic character of the lodge. From the tunes on the juke boxes, to the vintage china and furnishings, this place has magic all its own that cannot be described.

The adjacent 3000+ sq. ft. eight unit motel was built in 1963 and is featured on some Mid-Century/”Retro” web sites: the rooms have two double beds, tiled baths, a mini-fridge and TV. Décor is mid-century modern. The motel has had plumbing, electrical and air conditioning upgrades, new carpeting and mattresses. There is also a small one bedroom log cabin with fireplace, built in the 1940’s that has a new septic system and could be improved for rental. The buildings are all set back in the property ¼-mile off the road, for a unique private lakefront setting.

Purchase includes almost all antique and Old Hickory furnishings, all hotel china and table service, the birchlodge.com web site, row boats and kayaks, laundry with two washers and three driers and everything needed to continue the resort. Potential is virtually unlimited – extend the season, acquire a resort license, open the dining room for fine dining or????
