Frank Lloyd Wright’s Ennis House

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Ennis House. Photo courtesy of the LA Times.    Designed in 1923, the Ennis House stands out both in the canon of modern architecture as well as in the career of Frank Lloyd Wright, the home’s architect. Favored by filmmakers for its dramatic and exotic appearance, the Los Angeles home has been used in numerous films, commercials and fashion shoots.   A cantankerous womanizer, Frank Lloyd Wright was perhaps the United States’ most prolific architect. Born in 1867, Wright designed over 1000 structures in the course of his career, including some of the most recognizable buildings in the world. Beginning his practice in Chicago, Wright’s work was heavily influenced by the landscape of the American Midwest and horizontal planes feature prominently in his architecture. By the 1920s, when Wright began working in California,

The Handsomest Place in America

The Grange, now called The Codman Estate, is open to the public and operated by Historic New England.    Escaping financial ruin, the family of Ogden Codman Sr. fled the United States in the wake of the 1872 Great Boston Fire. Ogden Codman, Jr., who would grow up to be a prolific

Pete & Trudy Campbell’s fictional apartment at 83rd Street & Park Avenue.    I felt violated the first time Netflix made personalized recommendations based on my so called “taste profile.” Well, perhaps more embarrassed than violated. Apparently after watching weeks of dramas set in the English countryside, Netflix felt confident in recommending a stream of “20th Century Period Pieces Featuring a Strong Female Lead.” It was oddly specific, and yet sadly true. I will watch literally anything set in an English country house. After all, I watched the entirety of the last season of Downton Abbey just for the sweeping shots of Highclere Castle.   In reality, my “taste profile” extends beyond dramas set around neo-Palladian piles in Worcestershire. As a student of architectural history, I am particularly interested in the history of interiors, and what I look

Mid-Century Bowling Alley in Minnesota

What a delight it was to happenstance upon this whimsical dream space while browsing one of my favorite sites, Houzz, this morning. Ryan Claxton of Fusion Bowling put the space together for some Minnesota clients using parts salvaged from some 1950s lanes in Chicago. Perfect in every way! var OB_platformType=3; var
